Parktown Boys’ High School is fast approaching our centenary in 2023. Our adopted slogan of ‘Make the Lion Roar’ epitomises the energy and synergy which the school is incorporating as the school moves past one hundred years and into the future. As a school we pride ourselves on our sustained track record of excellence as one of the top performing schools in the country. Our key focus areas include academics, sports, culture and service.

The school continually achieves excellent academic results, as is evident by our learners’ achievements in outside benchmarks such as the Matriculation results, Olympiads, academic competitions and the accomplishments of our students at tertiary level. The school consistently achieves Matric pass rates of 98-100%, and high Bachelor Degree pass rates; our top achievers, without a doubt, excel in the academic realm. In 2019, for example, our top achievers included one candidate with 10 distinctions and three learners with 9 distinctions each.
The school has retained its status as a Top Feeder School to Wits University, and our students continue to excel at the highest levels. A recent example is Irfan Habib who, following his outstanding under-graduate achievements, has just been awarded a full scholarship to read for his PhD in Applied Physics at Oxford University in England. Our academic programme is extremely strong in Mathematics, Science, Information Technology and Accounting. Technology forms a key part of our methodology and curriculum. Our offering of Advanced Programme Mathematics showcases our special niche in Mathematics Education, and our commitment to excellence. In 2019 the school’s Advanced Programme Mathematics average was 73%, compared with the Independent Examinations Board’s (IEB) average of 63%. One of our boys placed in the Top 1% across the whole of South Africa. The school was also named the top performing school in Mathematics in the district, in addition to having the highest percentage of Matric students opting for Mathematics and having the highest through-put rate from Grade 10 – Grade 12.
Our sports programme is based on two aspects – attaining high levels of performance, and expecting high levels of involvement. At the core of the program is enabling each student to realise his talents and to achieve his potential. This specialised nature of our sports programmes involves a multi-disciplinary approach; our structures include having staff with the necessary expertise to cover aspects which apply across all activities. Each sport has programmes which are applied across the age groups to ensure growth and continuity. Focus is on all boys whether you play in u14E side or in the 1st team.
Service to others is a key component of our educational programme. Our ‘Heart of the Lion’ Community Service programme enjoys national recognition for its achievements, and regular recognition and accolades in the media. These activities include: hosting Christmas parties for under-privileged children; visiting old age homes and spending time with the elderly; assisting at soup kitchens and doing visits to children’s wards at hospitals dressed as Marvel Superheroes. The ‘Rally to Read’ programme is also being supported this year, and the school has partnered with a rural school in the Free State.
Parktown also boasts a state of the art boarding facility, which officially opened in 2016. The facility boasts all the creature comforts of home, while providing a disciplined environment based on mutual respect. There are both weekly and termly options available. Boarding tours are available on request and your son will be invited to spend a night in boarding as part of our ongoing sleepover experiences that we offer throughout the year.
